Social Enterprises in Ontario: Opportunities and Challenges

This session will provide a space for social entrepreneurs to share their experiences and work together to create recommendations towards enabling growth.

Ontario’s social enterprise sector is dynamic and growing rapidly, as described in Enterprise Change: Report of the 2015 Social Enterprise Survey for Ontario.

597 social enterprises, both non-profit and for-profit, reported creating significant economic and social impact across a diverse range of industries. These social enterprises create jobs, fight poverty, work locally, and engage diverse communities across Ontario.

In this session, social enterprises will explore these findings and use them to develop recommendations for enabling growth in a workshop format.

A brief introduction to the report highlights will be followed by an interactive session where participants will break out into facilitated working groups to discuss the following topics:

  • Access to capital
  • Sales and marketing
  • Training and educational resources

Workgroups will clarify the challenges, identify current opportunities and suggest recommendations. Each workgroup will have representatives from the public, private and nonprofit sectors.

The session will close off by sharing the key recommendations of each group.
